The human life cycle can be divided into four categories viz. the childhood, the adolescence, the adulthood and the old age. Among the different forms of media, the television (TV) has been able to successfully penetrate into almost every house where electricity is available.
With its reach into the families having children, teenagers, adults and elderly, a variation in the viewership of the TV programs can be noticed according to the age of the audience. During the process of human development, the human mind and body undergo changes which create a liking or disliking of the programs broadcast on the TV.
During childhood, the children like to play both outdoor and indoor games. So when outdoor sports like soccer, cricket, badminton, swimming, athletics, etc. are broadcast on the TV, the children like to watch them with great enthusiasm. Similarly they like to watch cartoons on the TV which resemble the characters used for creation of indoor games.
When the human reaches adolescence, there is an eagerness to make friends and to hang out in the casual company. Hence the teenagers in this age group like to watch music channels on the TV. Also they like to watch movies of their favorite actors and actresses whom they symbolize as role models.
With youth, there are new dreams and new goals to be achieved in life and in career. People in this age group have either jobs or run good businesses. Also some people marry during this period with a new hope to create a family. Hence men and women in this age group would like to watch TV channels which focus on money matters, lifestyle, buying a home, landscaping and interior decoration.
Once the human reaches his / her old age, he retires from the day-to-day career activities. Now the human has ample free time at home. Moreover the body and mind had been used to fatigue during the previous three stages of human life cycle. Due to wear and tear of the human, now the human in old age is ready to surrender his / her body to the Almighty. Hence the elderly people would often watch TV programs on spirituality.
Thus it can be concluded that there is a variation in the viewership of the TV programs with the age of the audience due to a variation in the interest of the humans during the four stages of a human life cycle.
